Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons for you are crunchy and good with ketchup...(source unknown) In the South China Sea is an island protected by nine dragons. Angie Tanaka has made one of them really, really angry. Angie says Thievery isn’t actually my vocation. It’s really more of a pursuit. It’s only my day job. I’m really an actress ... just kidding.

my question with this book is : "Where is this going?" Although it starts well, I got lost somewhere in the middle, wondering where this is going and where the author wants to take the story. Maybe it is because I did not klick with the writing style?

I loved this fantasy novel with a Buddhist twist. Angie Tanaka is both an engaging hero and a really friendly narrator. The beautiful warring dragons seem entirely believable even when they take human form. Very well written and totally different from what I usually read. I look forward to volume two and Susan Cogan's other novels too.
Read the novella. Enjoyed it enough to get the full book. I will get the next to read the rest of the story.
This isn't my normal type of reading, I like romance and mystery, but I enjoyed this story very much. I would think that a young adult would truly enjoy reading books from this author. Good luck to her with her future writings.
I bought this because I had read R.A. MacAvoy's Tea with the Black Dragon, and it's sequel.
Angie is young, complicated and involved with dragons. After a not-so successful jewel heist, she tries to escape and ends on 9-Dragon Island. Where live dragons. They are a dragon all of the time, but sometimes wears a human shape like a suit of clothes.
Susan writes an entertaining, well crafted story and I will want to read more from her.
I received a copy free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The story itself is a good, well-rounded fantasy story. I'm a fairly selective reader, and this kept me interested throughout the book. The main character, Angie, is interesting and colorful, and it's easy to see how she grows and adapts throughout the story. I'm a fan of character-based stories, so I'll likely be checking out more by this author in the future.

My only real gripes were minor really. There were a number of typos I found throughout the book, that I would have sent to the author had not wiped out all my highlights on me. I hope that the makeover this book has received since I read it has fixed these. The other gripe was a plot inconsistency that I found later on in the book, but I'm a nitpicker.

If you're looking for a good romp through an urban style setting, and you love dragons, pick up this story, it's a good read.
Angie is a thief, a good thief. She’s on the run from the Hong Kong police and she pays the captain of a fishing boat to take her anywhere else. Once they are out to sea, they get caught in a storm. The captain is forced to land on Shaolong Island, the home of nine dragons. Angie’s relief at getting away from the Hong Kong police is short lived. She still has her grandfather’s sword and a cache of stolen diamonds, but soon she is involved in the affairs of dragons.

Angie is a spunky, sassy heroine. She is not out to save the world, but just to get whatever she can for herself, or so she thinks. The dragons don’t pay much attention to her and really don’t care whether she is there or not, but when a sweet old lady gets murdered as Angie watches, and the weapon is Angie’s sword, Angie just steps up to figure things out. She feels very guilty because the woman was killed in the middle of Angie’s attempt to steal a very valuable pearl. Soon, Angie is trying to avoid the Silver Dragon, the husband of the murdered woman.

The pacing is excellent, with non-stop action. There are many plot twists as well, which kept me guessing. Angie denies that she wants to help, but her actions belie her words. There is also a nice overlay of Buddhist sayings which really fit the various situations. The world on Shaolong Island seems very real and I felt as if I, too, were being chased by dragons.

Fantasy lovers, especially those who enjoy dragon tales, are in for a treat with Black Jade Dragon. The story has a completely fitting ending, but I’ve learned that there is another book in the series, Dragon Sword, and I’ve already added it to my list of must read books.
